History
The story of The Maui Farm begins
with a group of community members gathered around a kitchen
table talking about the needs of youth in the foster care
system. They envisioned a program that would offer a consistent,
stable environment and provide long-term care for youth who were
not successful in traditional foster care, helping them make the
transition to self-sufficiency and independent living.
Based on their own experiences as foster parents
and youth workers within the system, they saw that youth respond
to working with plants and animals. From these beginnings, this
informal group of concerned citizens established The Maui Farm
in 1985.
The County of Maui provided 8.3 acres of land
near Makawao for The Maui Farm and through the years its campus
has been developed to include family-style homes, farm
structures, a therapeutic farm, gardens, and other spacious
outdoors areas.
Today, The Maui Farm is a nationally accredited
organization that provides a unique, community-based alternative
to instructional care.
