The Akamai Parent Training
All parents in our
Family
Strengthening Program participate in the Akamai Parent Training Program. The
program is designed to expand their knowledge of how a healthy family functions
and to help them learn to apply parenting strategies and skills that will unify
and strengthen their family. Parents participate in individual and group
training sessions that are structured to support them in their own personal
growth as well as help them feel a part of a parent support group.
We have learned from families over the years that formal parent training
programs are helpful however, parents often forget or fail to recognize the
opportunity to apply what they are taught in class in real life scenarios or
while interacting with their children on a daily basis. Therefore TMF supports
the family in successfully applying the strategies and skills taught in class by
having the family advocate provide in-home modeling and support to the family
during after-school hours.
The Akamai Parenting Training Program utilizes an 'Ohana Model as the
foundation for introducing the basic family functions, teaching family values
and offering "hands on" activities that are culturally appropriate for
strengthening the family unit.
The 'Ohana Model offers its members a feeling of safety, a sense of care and
belonging and a stable environment to live in. Individuals contribute to the 'ohana
as well as give and receive emotional support from one another. The 'ohana
structure has clear standards of conduct, expectations, roles and
responsibilities and clear lines of authority and communication. Individuals are
allowed to express and correct hostilities in a manner that does not create harm
to one's self or others. |
