Therapeutic Farm
The Therapeutic Farm Program provides an innovative approach and unique
opportunity for families and youth to become good stewards of the 'aina. The program
utilizes an experiential approach in teaching sustainable agriculture practices
that are values-based. We say "activity is our therapy." Learning occurs through
modeling, observation and instruction. Individuals gain awareness, learn
responsibility and gain self-worth through skill building and positive
experiences in a variety of farm projects, including
growing food and caring for
the farm animals.
The Maui Farm recognizes the usefulness of what plants,
animals and the natural world have to teach us about natural cycles that give
meaning and purpose to our lives. Families and individuals are given their
own garden space in which they learn to design, plant, maintain and harvest
their own choice of plants, herbs, flowers, vegetables, etc. while living at The
Maui Farm. The families and youth also participate in individual and community gardening activities that
help to build a sense of community among the residents at The Maui
Farm. Families learn that 'aloha 'aina (farming) is a way of life that they
experience while they live here. The families are taught a variety of gardening techniques
such as container gardening that allows them to garden in an apartment setting.
Families are encouraged to continue healthy family living once they have
completed the program and transition into a long-term affordable home. |
